These Foods May Slash Your Risk Of Dying From Heart Disease

Specialists conducted experiments on rats, which had a cardiovascular disease caused by food high in fat content. Portions rodents gave different, someone less, someone more.

The researchers found that mice fed a low-potassium diet showed an increase in vascular calcification and greater arterial stiffness, while mice fed a high-potassium diet showed a significant reduction in both conditions.

There are between 40,000 and 45,000 premature deaths from kidney disease in the United Kingdom every year.

Scientists involved in the study, Paul Sanders, said the findings have important translational potentials as they demonstrate the benefits of potassium supplementation that are adequate for the prevention of vascular calcification in atherosclerotic-prone rats, and the adverse effects of low potassium intake.

It will help relieve blood flow throughout the body, and help deliver oxygen to vital organs.

Other high-potassium foods include prunes, white beans and spinach.

Mechanistically, they found that low-potassium elevated intracellular calcium in the vascular smooth muscle cells, via a potassium transport channel called the inward rectifier potassium channel.

The observations showed how the people who received low potassium foods had a high level of stiffening in their arteries, much higher when compared to the medium group. The findings of the new study back up this recommendation.

Working from living mice down to molecular events in cells in culture, the UAB researchers determined a causative link between reduced dietary potassium and vascular calcification in atherosclerosis, as well as uncovered the underlying pathogenic mechanisms.

Yawing Chen, who worked on the study, said vascular calcification is a risk factor that predicts cardiovascular complications that harm some diseases including atherosclerosis. However, they think they are promising as potassium is associated with several human diseases. Banana also contains fiber and antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Copper, and Magnesium.

On the other hand, sweet potatoes also contain good amounts of potassium.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a serving of at least 3500 mg of potassium daily. Just one banana has 425 mg of potassium, a cup of sliced avocado has 708 mg, and only half a cup of spinach contains 420 mg of the nutrient.
