Giants lose Odell Beckham to broken ankle as disastrous season gets worse

One of the biggest injuries from Week 5, with two games yet to be completed, happened when New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham went down with a severe-looking left leg injury late in Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

"I don't know if the Giants will be favored in another game this year", a sportsbook manager for Caesars Palace told ESPN.

With Beckham Jr out, Manning then fumbled the ball in Giants territory, leading to a miserable defeat at the Chargers' hands. A breakdown in coverage allowed all-world wide receiver Odell Beckham get all alone down the right sideline and Manning found him for a 48-yard touchdown.

By the time the Giants were trying to march for the game-winning touchdown, they had one healthy wide receiver remaining.

Beckham went up to catch a pass with the Giants holding a slim two-point lead.

As far as any long-term effect to Beckham's health, McAdoo said he has not gotten into any of that.

One of the main factors for the Los Angeles Chargers' first victory of the season against the New York Giants on Sunday was the rugged play of RB Melvin Gordon. Beckham had to be carted off the field. He lacked confidence following the win and said aloud, "maybe I don't have it anymore". While Johnson hasn't played since 2011 and Owens in 2010, the interesting thing is the neither receiver has officially retired from the NFL.

Dwayne Harris, who also returns punts and kickoffs, will have surgery Tuesday for a broken foot, while Sterling Shepard was hurt on the same series as Marshall.

On Sunday, while eight road teams walked away victorious, it was the players who didn't walk away at all who drew much of the attention. They had earlier lost rookie cornerback Kevin King, who had a big hit on Ezekiel Elliott on a screen pass on the first play from scrimmage and later left with a concussion in the first half. The punter Brad Wing has had underwhelming kicks in consecutive weeks, and the kicker, Aldrick Rosas, missed a 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the team's loss to Tampa Bay. "We didn't execute at times very well, but they still found a way to get the job done". The Giants lost four receivers on Sunday, at least two (Beckham and Harris) appeared serious.

Except this is the 2017 Giants season.

Before Darkwa's score, the Giants got a safety when Chargers center Spencer Pulley snapped the ball before Rivers was ready. A trip to play the Raiders awaits this week, while visits to New England and Jacksonville and a home game with the 3-1 Denver Broncos loom, as well. "But they went out, they played fast and they played hard".

"Back to work", coach Ben McAdoo said.
