Florida woman arrested after leaving child in hot vehicle during jail visit

The toddler was in the vehicle for about 20 minutes with the heat index at 110 degrees, police said.

Fox 35 reports that 21-year-old Rachel Etienne left her two-year-old daughter in the auto with the engine off as she visited a prisoner in the Orange County Jail.

Deputies said Rachael Etienne left the child in the vehicle for more than 20 minutes without the engine running before a corrections officer who was making rounds on the property around 12:10 p.m. found the 3-year-old.

Etienne was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

At first, Etienne claimed she had also left a 14-year-old inside the auto to look after the child, but surveillance footage proved that to be a lie.

Tejada-Monfonte said the child was sweating profusely, but was otherwise uninjured.

A neighbor of Etienne told FOX35 Orlando she had previously warned Etienne about leaving her daughter in a vehicle. Authorities said she appeared remorseful. FOX 35 spoke with Etienne's neighbor, who said the woman had previously brushed off their warnings about leaving her daughter in a hot vehicle unattended.

She left jail after posting bail.

"We told her about that, you can't leave them for no length of time in a vehicle". The girl is now in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
